Fortnite is known for having characters from all sorts of franchises, but one major company is still holding out – Nintendo.
In an interview, Epic’s Saxs Persson said getting Nintendo IPs is still a huge goal: “Our players would love it.”
Fans have wondered if Fortnite being cross-platform is what’s stopping Nintendo collabs so far. Since Fortnite is on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, etc, their characters would appear beyond just the Switch version.
Previously, Nintendo allowed content in Rocket League on Switch only. But Fortnite collabs are available to all players equally. Dividing up the fanbase now doesn’t fit.
So for now, no Mario, Link or Samus alongside Venom, John Wick and Peter Griffin. A shame, as Nintendo properties would be an amazing get for Fortnite’s huge pop culture mashup.
Nintendo is very protective of their IPs crossing over to potential competitors’ platforms. So they likely see Fortnite’s universal availability as too risky.
Epic will probably keep trying to make it happen. But for now, seems like a real long shot we’ll web swing as Spider-Mario or blast Goombas as Master Chief anytime soon.
Here’s hoping they can find a solution, as Nintendo characters in Fortnite would delight millions of fans. Until then, we’ll have to enjoy the many other amazing franchises represented.
