The development team of Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 14 had considered adding the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series as playable games in the MMORPG’s Gold Saucer area. The Gold Saucer is known for housing various Final Fantasy-themed mini-games in the online title, so the idea of adding more of them is not surprising.
During the United States leg of the 2023 Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival, the new expansion, Dawntrail, was announced, and fans got details about the final content update for Endwalker. In an interview, Final Fantasy 14 Director Naoki Yoshida revealed that they had wanted to incorporate the Pixel Remaster collection, which includes six games from the first Final Fantasy to Final Fantasy 6, into the Gold Saucer to coincide with its release in April 2023. However, technical challenges with the remastered games running on “middleware” prevented them from implementing the feature at the time.
Yoshida explained that adding the remastered games would require creating a separate system within the MMORPG to play the “middleware” and run the games, making the process complicated. While the team may have other development priorities in the pipeline, Yoshida remains positive about the idea and hopes they can implement it in the future.
Given the recent announcement of Final Fantasy 14’s upcoming expansion, players are likely focused on the new content, but the potential addition of the Pixel Remaster games as playable content in the future may still excite fans.
