8BitDo Unveils Nintendo-Inspired Mechanical Keyboard with Super Buttons Designed for Endless Gaming Thrills

Novelty accessory maker 8BitDo has delighted gamers and nostalgia-seekers alike with its latest creation, the Retro Mechanical Keyboard. Inspired by Nintendo’s iconic NES and Famicom consoles from the 1980s, this mechanical keyboard promises a trip down memory lane with its classic design and features.

Priced at $100, the 8BitDo Retro Mechanical Keyboard offers both wired and wireless modes, allowing users to enjoy the convenience of wireless connectivity or the stability of a wired connection. The keyboard also supports custom key mapping, giving users the freedom to personalize their typing experience. However, the standout features are the two giant red buttons that are reminiscent of the classic gaming controllers, inviting users to give them a satisfying mash.

The keyboard comes in two colorways: the “N Edition,” inspired by the NES, and the “Fami Edition,” drawing influence from the Famicom. Both color schemes perfectly match the classic consoles they pay homage to, with the NES-inspired variant featuring a white/dark gray/black color scheme, while the Famicom-inspired one adopts white/crimson hues.

The Fami Edition includes Japanese characters below the English markings on each standard alphanumerical key, adding an authentic touch. The keyboard also features built-in dials and a power indicator with an old-school appearance. Moreover, customization enthusiasts will appreciate the hot-swappable printed circuit board (PCB), which allows them to replace each button. The keyboard utilizes Kailh Box White Switches V2 and Gatreon Green Switches for the Super Buttons.

Customizability extends to the two large buttons, as users can configure their functions using 8BitDo’s Ultimate Software. The buttons connect directly to the keyboard via a 3.5mm jack, and additional sets can be purchased separately for $20.

The 87-key keyboard offers Bluetooth, 2.4 GHz wireless, and USB wired modes. While officially listed as compatible with Windows and Android, 8BitDo confirmed that it will also work with macOS. With a 2,000mAh battery, the keyboard boasts an estimated 200 hours of usage on a four-hour charge.

Pre-orders for the 8BitDo Retro Mechanical Keyboard are available starting today on Amazon and directly from 8BitDo. The keyboard is expected to begin shipping on August 10th, allowing enthusiasts to indulge in the nostalgia of classic gaming while enjoying the convenience of modern technology.
