The first trailer for ‘Super Mario Bros.’ reveals problems in the Mushroom Kingdom

It’s now been revealed what the long-awaited Super Mario Bros. film will look like. Nintendo and Illumination have released a teaser video for the computer-generated blockbuster (see below). In the video, Bowser (played by Jack Black) terrorizes a penguin kingdom in search of an invincible star. Not unexpectedly, we know who will come to their aid – Mario (Chris Pratt) makes an unexpected appearance in the Mushroom Kingdom, as does his brother Luigi (Charlie Day).

Among the other prominent names is Anya Taylor-Joy from The Queen’s Gambit as Princess Peach, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong. The release date for Super Mario Bros. is set for April 7th, 2023.

The makers aren’t taking any risks, if the teaser is any indication. This looks to be a basic CG picture intended to appeal to a broad audience – there will be no flashbacks to the weird 1993 live action feature. However, if the legendary game franchise isn’t enough, the top-tier actors and sumptuous aesthetics may make it stand out.
