Network Name

Meaning – The term network name, refers to the symbolic identifier by which users refer to a network-accessible unit, a link, or a link station within a given subnetwork. In APPN networks, network names are also used for routing purposes.

It also refers to the name of the APPL statement defining a VTAM application program. The network name must be unique across domains.

These strings are separate from the names of individual devices and the addresses they use to identify each other. Network names take several different forms.

IT professionals often refer to computer names that are maintained in the Domain Name System (DNS) as network names, even though these aren’t technically names of networks.

Example of usage “A computer might be named COMP and belong to the a.b.com domain. The DNS knows this computer as COMP.a.b.com and advertises that name to other devices. Some people refer to this expanded DNS representation as to the computer’s network name.”
