Meaning – The domain name system, is a list that contains all the registered domain names on the internet, along with their linked IP addresses. Some people refer to the domain name system, as the telephone book for the internet.
A web browser is able to load a particular website using the corresponding IP address. However, for us, it may not be possible to remember each and every IP address, and thus we resort to using the website’s name in the search bar of the web browser. The domain name system takes over and converts the domain name into the corresponding IP address, which makes it possible for the browser to load the desired website.
Example of usage – “When he typed in the name of his favourite website, the domain name system converted the same into an IP address that the web browser understood and used, to load the desired web page.”
