Meaning – The term fixed disk, is used to describe the hard drive of the computer. It is also known as a fixed disk drive, fixed media or fixed storage.
The reason we call the hard drive a fixed drive is because the drives are internal or in an enclosure that’s not easily removed. The opposite of a fixed disk is a removable disk, and this is the kind of drive that can be easily removed or replaced inside a computer. A common example of removable disks is a floppy disk and CD-ROM disk.
It is interesting to note that while an external hard disk is removable, it is still referred to as a fixed disk.
Example of usage – “He needed to take his computer to the service center as there was a problem with the fixed disk, and only authorized personnel were capable of accessing and fixing it.”
