Stardew Valley’s Developer Attempts to Explain What’s in Pierre’s Display

One Stardew Valley user has asked developer ConcernedApe what the green crops in General Store owner Pierre’s display are, and even he is unclear. Stadew Valley offers a wide variety of crops to nurture, however, the green ones on Pierre’s display do not match anything else in the game.

Pierre, who runs Pelican Town’s General Store, is the main place where players go to get the seeds they need to cultivate crops in Stardew Valley and earn a living as a farmer. Naturally, this implies that he has a wide variety of seasonal commodities for sale, ranging from kale and tomatoes to corn and pumpkins. This still leaves the subject of what is in his display unanswered.

The exhibit in issue occurs during one of Stardew Valley’s festivals, and the contents, such as blueberries, potatoes, and tomatoes, are clearly identified, but not two bundles of green crops. Twitter user Matty boi recently asked developer ConcernedApe to explain what they are, and although he believes the bundle on the bottom right is kale, he is unclear about what is on the top right.

One potential explanation for why the mystery crops are unlike anything else in the game is that the one on the bottom right is an earlier form of kale, which explains the likeness, and the one on the top right was either an older version of another crop or was deleted out of the game entirely. Another factor is that these are Pierre’s farming endeavours, and although most turned out as expected, others were unrecognisable. Given that he would take credit for the player’s successful harvests in Stardew Valley, it is understandable that he would do so out of jealousy if his own farming efforts are less than brilliant.

It’s entertaining to hypothesise as to why the enigmatic crops are in the festival display of the shady shop owner in Pelican Town, whatever the reasons may be. Small nuances like these being brought out by fans and acknowledged by the game’s developer show how Stardew Valley can maintain a vibrant community despite being a primarily single-player game published years ago. Because Stardew Valley version 1.6 has not yet been published, it is possible that the mystery crop will have a function other than Pierre’s presentation.
