GrubHub Plus is now available for free to Amazon Prime members for a year

Amazon Prime members in the United States will receive a new bonus as part of their subscription, the firm revealed. They can now get a free year of Grubhub Plus, the monthly subscription service that offers free food delivery on orders over $12 from partner restaurants, starting today. Grubhub Plus is generally $9.99 per month.

According to Amazon, free Grubhub Plus deliveries are available from hundreds of thousands of restaurants in over 4,000 cities across the United States. After the year is gone, Grubhub will begin charging $9.99 per month for continuing access. Existing Grubhub Plus customers can still take advantage of the discount, which will take effect at the start of their next monthly cycle. When you cancel Prime, you also deactivate Grubhub Plus.

The transaction comes just a few years after Amazon closed down Amazon Restaurants, its own attempt to compete in the takeout delivery sector. Between 2015 and 2019, the service was available, although it faced severe competition from the likes of Uber Eats and DoorDash.

Since then, the e-commerce behemoth has primarily focused on grocery deliveries, but it has maintained a foothold in the takeout delivery business through partnerships with other companies. It announced an investment in Europe-focused Deliveroo in 2019, and last year began offering access to its Deliveroo Plus subscription service as an extra bonus for Prime members in the UK. As part of the deal announced today, Amazon will acquire a 2% ownership in Grubhub, which may grow to 15% over time.

GrubHub Plus isn’t the only new advantage Amazon is introducing today for Prime subscribers. For the next 48 hours, the e-commerce behemoth will also make a short teaser video for its upcoming Lord of the Rings TV show, Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, available only to Prime customers. Members can watch the teaser on the Amazon website for the show. The trailer concludes by promising another teaser on July 14th, ahead of the series premiere on September 2nd.
