Apple allows other earbuds to connect quickly like AirPods

Apple is making a change to how iPhones work with different types of earbuds. In a new software update called iOS 26.3, the company is adding a feature that allows earbuds from other brands to connect to an iPhone almost instantly. Usually, when you use Apple’s own AirPods, a small window pops up on your screen the moment you open the case. This makes it very easy to link the earbuds to your phone without going through the settings menu. Now, Apple is opening this “fast pairing” feature to other companies so their earbuds can work the same way.

This change is happening because of new rules in the European Union. These rules were created to stop large tech companies from making their own products work better than everyone else’s. By forcing Apple to share this feature, the European Union wants to make sure that customers have more choices. If you buy earbuds from a brand like Sony or Bose, you will soon be able to enjoy the same quick and easy setup that AirPods users have had for years. This makes the iPhone feel more open and friendly to different kinds of technology.

What’s the catch for users?

While this is great news for people who like to use different brands, there is one big problem. As of early 2026, Apple is only turning this feature on for users who live within the European Union. If you live in the United States, India, or other parts of the world, your iPhone will likely continue to work the old way. This means that if you buy non-Apple earbuds, you will still have to open your Bluetooth settings and find the device manually to connect it for the first time.

Apple has not said if it will bring this feature to the rest of the world later on. In the past, the company has often limited specific features to certain regions because of local laws. This can be frustrating for people who want the latest technology regardless of where they live. For now, it seems that Apple is only making these changes because they are legally required to do so in Europe. This creates a situation where the same iPhone can have different features depending on which country you are standing in.

What exactly is proximity pairing and how does it work?

The technology behind this feature is called proximity pairing. It uses a low-power Bluetooth signal to tell the iPhone when a set of earbuds is very close by. When the phone detects the signal, it automatically shows a picture of the earbuds and asks if you want to connect them. This saves time and prevents confusion, especially for people who are not experts at using technology. It also allows the earbuds to show their battery life directly on the iPhone’s home screen, which is a very helpful feature.

Beyond just connecting quickly, the new update also helps with notifications. Third-party earbuds will now be able to receive and read out alerts from your phone more reliably. This is also coming to smartwatches that are not made by Apple. This means that if you have a different brand of watch, it will work much better with your iPhone than it did before. It is a step toward making all of our gadgets work together more smoothly, which is the main goal of the new digital rules in Europe.

When will this release and will it cost anything?

The iOS 26.3 update is currently being tested by a small group of people and is expected to be released to everyone in early 2026. Like most Apple software updates, it will be free to download for anyone with a compatible iPhone. You will likely see a notification on your phone when the update is ready to be installed. Once you have the new software, you can start using the fast-pairing feature with any earbuds that support the new technology.

What you also need to keep in mind is that the earbud manufacturers also have to update their own software for this to work. You might need to download an update for your earbuds through their official app before they can use the new fast-pairing window. While many new earbuds in 2026 will come with this feature ready to go, older models might not be able to use it. As the year goes on, we will see which companies decide to support this new way of connecting to the iPhone.
