
The most recognizable name in PC benchmarking is building something new, and it is betting the whole thing on path tracing. UL Solutions has confirmed that its next 3DMark GPU benchmark will be fully path-traced, a step up from the hybrid ray-tracing tests that define the current generation of graphics workloads. To mark the occasion, the company has landed a sponsor with skin in the PC game: power-supply maker Seasonic.
If you have ever bought a graphics card, you have almost certainly seen a 3DMark score. UL’s benchmarks are the shorthand reviewers, overclockers and system builders reach for when they want an apples-to-apples read on how fast a GPU actually is. So a new flagship test is not a minor housekeeping update; it effectively resets the yardstick the whole industry uses to measure itself.
Why path tracing matters
Path tracing is the more demanding, more physically accurate cousin of the ray tracing already shipping in games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Alan Wake 2. Instead of bolting a few reflections and shadows onto a traditional rendering pipeline, it simulates the way light actually bounces around a scene. The result looks stunning and punishes hardware accordingly, which is exactly the point of a benchmark designed to separate this year’s GPUs from next year’s.
UL says the test has “been in the works for a long time” and is built to “push current and next-gen gaming hardware to their limits.” The company is also leaning into the artistry: it is promising an elaborate hand-crafted scene rather than the abstract tech demos benchmarks sometimes settle for. The teaser image framing all this carries a not-so-subtle subtitle, calling the benchmark “built to evaluate modern AI-capable hardware” — a nod to how tightly GPU marketing and AI acceleration are now intertwined.
What Seasonic gets out of it
Seasonic’s role here is sponsorship rather than engineering. Its logo will appear inside the finished benchmark, seen, as UL puts it, by “millions of gamers, tech enthusiasts, members of tech media and more” as they run the test. For a power-supply brand that lives or dies on the trust of enthusiast builders, planting a flag inside the tool those same builders use to validate their rigs is a shrewd bit of placement.
A word of restraint is warranted. UL has not shared a release date, supported hardware list, or any actual performance figures, and “when it is ready” is doing a lot of work in the announcement. Sponsor reveals also tend to arrive well ahead of finished software. Still, a fully path-traced 3DMark is a meaningful signal about where UL thinks GPU performance is heading — and the direction is unmistakably toward heavier, light-simulated workloads that today’s top cards will sweat over.
