With just five races left in the Formula 1 season, Lewis Hamilton is closing the gap on Sergio Perez in the Drivers’ standings, trailing by only 30 points. Hamilton has been on a remarkable comeback, having taken 25 points off Perez’s lead in the last three races.
This thrilling battle for the championship appears poised to go down to the wire. At the United States Grand Prix, Hamilton holds an on-track advantage over his rival, having qualified third compared to Perez’s ninth position.
While the Red Bull RB19 has shown impressive pace throughout the championship, Perez is currently going through his second performance slump of the season. Additionally, Mercedes introduced upgrades with the W14, and Hamilton noted that he “actually felt” the impact of the new floor. This combination of factors could potentially see Hamilton disrupting Red Bull’s dream of securing a 1-2 finish.
Hamilton is determined to seize any opportunity to gain points and close the gap, but he also acknowledges the strength and resilience of the Mercedes team. He said, “I mean, all of us are pushing to finish first. So I think it will be just a showing of really, you know, resilience and strength and depth from our team.”
Reflecting on the team’s journey, he added, “I think we had a difficult year last year. And even with the start to this year, we didn’t expect to be where we are. So to be fighting for second in the Constructors’ and trying to maintain that position against rivals like Ferrari and McLaren is a significant achievement.”
Regarding the battle with Sergio Perez, Hamilton remains cautious, stating, “It’s too early to say. None of us have done any long running. So I have no idea.” He also speculates that the absence of Red Bull in the top three during the race may lead to a closer and more competitive contest.
Hamilton will start third on the grid for the United States Grand Prix, with Charles Leclerc taking pole position and Lando Norris alongside him. With Hamilton’s impressive track record at the Circuit of The Americas, the race promises an exciting showdown between the top drivers.
