Sega Sammy has successfully acquired Rovio, the developer of the popular Angry Birds franchise, for $776 million. This acquisition is aimed at strengthening Sega’s presence in the mobile gaming space.
While Angry Birds remains Rovio’s most iconic franchise, the company also has other mobile games in its portfolio, including Sugar Blast and Small Town Murders. Sega sees the purchase as an opportunity to gain not only recognizable IP but also a well-established infrastructure for developing, publishing, and advertising mobile games.
Sega plans to leverage this infrastructure to create mobile titles based on its own IPs, such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Samba de Amigo, Persona, and Football Manager. Additionally, Sega will likely continue to develop new Angry Birds mobile games.
The mobile gaming market is highly lucrative, and Sega aims to expand its presence in this field. This acquisition provides Sega with a strong foundation for achieving its mobile gaming goals.
