Twitter integration will be removed from PlayStation Consoles next week

It looks like Twitter integration will be leaving PlayStation devices starting next week. Sony has issued a formal announcement to the PlayStation community that users will not be able to see Twitter content on their PS4 and PS5 consoles, beginning November 13, 2023. Players will also lose the ability to share their contents to Twitter, directly from their consoles, something that was possible, and it still possible till the aforementioned date.

“As of November 13, 2023, integration with X (formerly known as Twitter) will no longer function on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 consoles. This includes the ability to view any content published on X on PS5/PS4, and the ability to post and view content, trophies, and other gameplay-related activities on X directly from PS5/PS4 (or link an X account to do so). For details on how to share game captures from PS5, click here, and for PS4, click here.”, the announcement reads.

Sony has not given a specific reason as to why it is removing Twitter/X integration on its consoles, but if we were to take a guess, it is most probably because of the increase in the prices to use the Twitter API. The enterprise tier costs $42,000/month, which is pretty steep, even for a giant like Sony. But this is not the first time a major company has ended Twitter integration on its products. In April, Microsoft announced that Twitter integration will be ended on Xbox consoles, and they followed it up by ending the integration on the Windows Game Bar as well.

Blizzard, the developer behind World of Warcraft also removed Twitter integration all the way back in February. It is safe to assume that this is purely due to the unreasonable pricing of the Twitter API, and no matter how big of an organisation it may be, spending $42,000 per month, to be able to integrate Twitter into their products, sounds pretty unreasonable.

Would you spend this kind of money for Twitter integration?
