The debut trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is more exciting than any of Marvel’s other big announcements at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.
During Marvel’s big Hall H showcase today, actress Letitia Wright stated that the purpose of Wakanda Forever for her and the rest of the cast and crew was to honor the legacy that Chadwick Boseman left after his death. The teaser for Wakanda Forever does not directly address what happened to T’Challa in the MCU, but his absence and the recent discovery of a new undersea nation have the world — and especially Wakanda — on edge once more. While Wakandans like Shuri (Wright), Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), and Okoye (Danai Gurira) are seen mourning and attempting to figure out how to move on, the teaser also introduces a new generation of amphibian humanoids, one of whom is born with winged feet.
In Marvel comics, the kingdoms of Wakanda and Atlantis have clashed several times, with disastrous results as their respective monarchs’ egos clashed. Namor (Tenoch Huerta) and the other Atlanteans appear to have ties to Mayan cultures in this scene, and their entrance appears to spark some type of conflict with the humans of the surface world. Riri Williams (Dominque Thorne), along with M’Baku (Winston Duke), Ayo (Florence Kasumba), and the rest of the Dora Milaje, is seen preparing for the fight Wakanda is about to face, and judging by the trailer’s shots of mayhem, they’re going to need her help.
Florence Kasumba, Michaela Coel, and Martin Freeman also appear in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The film was released in theatres on November 11th.
