Sony has introduced a small camera specifically designed for use in drones, named the ILX-LR1. Despite its small size, the camera is powerful, capable of shooting videos up to 60FPS and capturing content in up to 4K resolution, thanks to its 1.38-inch Exmor R CMOS image sensor. The camera features a BIONZ XR processor for low-noise photographs and realistic colors, along with a wide ISO range from 100 to 32,000, suitable for various lighting conditions.
To maintain a lightweight design for longer flight times and compatibility with smaller drones, Sony removed several features commonly found on cameras, such as a viewfinder, rear LCD screen, handgrip, and even a battery. Instead, users must connect the camera directly to a drone’s power supply for operation.
Sony also introduced changes to its Camera Remote Software Development Kit (SDK), enhancing its functionality for drone applications. These changes provide expanded menu settings and notifications for recording events.
The ILX-LR1 camera supports a wide range of E-mount lenses, allowing users to choose the right lens for their drone photography needs. While the release date is unknown, reports suggest it may launch in December for $2,950 in the US, with Sony marketing it to professional users.
