The next move in Nvidia’s AI masterplan: Powering Humanoid Robots

Nvidia, the leading AI chipmaker, is stepping up its involvement in robotics for 2025. As reported by the Financial Times, Nvidia will launch a new generation of compact computers designed specifically for humanoid robots, known as Jetson Thor, in the first half of the new year.

This move, while expected, marks a key development in Nvidia’s long-term strategy. However, the company isn’t looking to challenge major players like Tesla directly. Instead, Nvidia aims to serve as the underlying original equipment manufacturer (OEM) for the vast number of robot developers globally, a strategy that Deepu Talla, Nvidia’s VP of robotics, discussed in Tokyo last month.

So, why is Nvidia making this push now? According to Talla, two breakthroughs are driving the company’s shift: the rapid rise of generative AI models and the capability to train robots using simulated environments.

While Nvidia hasn’t said this explicitly, there’s an underlying factor at play: the company’s move into AI-powered robots coincides with efforts by major clients, including Amazon and Google, to reduce their reliance on Nvidia’s AI chips by developing their own alternatives.
