Rumors keep swirling about when we can expect the Nintendo Switch 2 to launch. Initial reports suggested a Fall 2024 release, perfectly timed for the critical holiday shopping season.
But multiple new sources, including VGC, now point to Nintendo pushing things back a bit – telling game publishers to target Q1 2025 instead. A Brazilian journalist’s inside scoop and similar whispers to Eurogamer reinforce that new early 2025 timeline.
Launching in March 2025 would notably mark almost exactly 8 years after the original Switch’s March 2017 debut. VGC’s sources confirmed several Switch 2 launch titles are indeed now aiming for that 2025 window.
The “delay” would give developers extra time to polish games meant to showcase the new hardware. Prime suspect? Metroid Prime 4 – largely MIA since its 2017 teaser and 2019 reboot. Given it’s been radio silent for 5 years now, Polygon theorizes Nintendo may be holding back the highly anticipated title as a Switch 2 headliner.
Whenever it does drop, the Switch 2 has impossible shoes to fill. Its predecessor has already become Nintendo’s highest selling console ever, even besting rival boxes from Sony and Microsoft.
Here’s hoping the Switch 2 can capture that magic again when it (likely) releases in early 2025! Nintendo seems smart to give their hardware and software teams a little more lead time – but the wait will be tough for eager fans like me. Got any predictions for Switch 2 features or launch games?
