Nintendo has been getting a lot of flak for its online system lately. People are always ragging on them for being slow to catch up with the latest tech and features. Just look at their voice chat setup, which requires a dang smartphone. And let’s not forget about the hassle of moving your data from an old console to a new one. But hey, there might be a silver lining on the horizon.
In a recent shareholder meeting, someone had the guts to ask if our Nintendo Switch purchases would carry over to future consoles. And you know what? The big cheese himself, President and CEO Shuntaro Furukawa, dropped a hint. He said (via Google Translate), “When we switch from Nintendo Switch to the next-gen console, we wanna do everything we can to make sure you can smoothly transition using your Nintendo account.” So, it sounds like Nintendo is at least considering the possibility of letting us transfer our beloved Switch titles from the eShop to whatever comes next. Now, hold your horses, ’cause Nintendo never spills the beans on unannounced hardware, so take it with a grain of salt.
Oh, and just to jog your memory, your old Nintendo Wii U games didn’t carry over to the Switch. Quite the bummer, right? It’s a different story with Sony and Microsoft, though. Most games from their last-gen consoles work just fine on the new ones. But Nintendo, they like to shake things up by giving their controllers a makeover with each new console. So, sometimes it’s a real struggle to make a game compatible with both the old and new generations.
But hey, let’s give credit where it’s due. Nintendo seems to be mulling over some improvements for their next console. And you know what’s been a major letdown? When you’ve bought a digital game, but it doesn’t make the jump to the new console. It’s beyond frustrating, especially when you see that the PlayStation 5 can handle most PlayStation 4 games, and the Xbox Series S and X can play a whole bunch of Xbox One games, and even some Xbox 360 titles. And get this, Microsoft even lets you carry over certain physical games. So, Nintendo has a few options on the table for bringing our existing games along for the ride. Whatever their next console ends up being like, let’s hope it plays nice with all those Switch games we’ve collected over the years.
