As Verstappen soaked in the applause on the podium, his triumphant smile told the story of a near-flawless performance. Starting from pole, he fended off the early threat of Charles Leclerc before controlling the race with metronomic precision. While others floundered in his wake, Verstappen was in a league of his own, eventually cruising home 22 seconds clear of teammate Sergio Perez.

It was the mark of a supreme talent at the very top of his game – an early warning that this prodigious champion will take some stopping. “It’s unbelievable. I think today went even better than expected,” he beamed afterwards. “The car was super enjoyable to drive – we really stayed out of trouble and it couldn’t have been better…”

For the opposition left trailing in his wake, Verstappen’s smile may well have sparked more anxiety than admiration. It was a grin bursting with self-belief and ambition, foreshadowing a long season stuck staring at the champion’s disappearing rear wing.
