A Season of Highs and Lessons
Norris played a pivotal role in McLaren’s resurgence this year. After Verstappen and Red Bull dominated the early part of the season, McLaren steadily improved, positioning Norris as Verstappen’s primary rival. Though Verstappen clinched his fourth drivers’ title in Las Vegas, Norris ended the year on a high with a victory at the season finale in Abu Dhabi.
Reflecting on the year, Norris admitted that his biggest takeaway was his newfound belief in himself.
“I definitely have had things to improve on and to look back on… but the one thing I’ve learned from [this year] is that I have what it takes,” Norris said.
The 25-year-old acknowledged his tendency to be self-critical, saying he often needs to prove himself before fully believing in his capabilities.
Battles with Verstappen: A Stepping Stone
Key moments for Norris came in on-track duels with Verstappen, where he learned to measure himself against the reigning champion.
“It’s Max – going up against Max in any state is always going to be tricky, and no one has a nice time racing Max,” Norris admitted.
He cited pivotal races like Mexico and Austin as turning points, emphasizing how those battles showed him where he could improve. He also recognized Verstappen’s vulnerability in rare instances, giving him confidence for future challenges.
Improvements in Qualifying and Racecraft
Norris highlighted improvements in his qualifying performances, pointing out how he consistently closed off his laps compared to mistakes made in 2023. He also emphasized learning when to accept defeat in battles, a critical skill in the highly competitive environment of F1.
“The thing is, what you don’t see on the outside are those moments where, if I did certain things, we would have crashed,” Norris explained.
These nuanced lessons, combined with McLaren’s growing competitiveness, have left Norris optimistic for 2025.
Looking Ahead
Norris is clear-eyed about the work needed to bridge the gap to Verstappen and Red Bull next season.
“I didn’t have what it took this season to fight against Max and deliver what I needed… but it certainly gave me the feeling of, ‘okay, if I improve this little bit here, this little bit here,’ I’ve definitely got what it takes.”
With McLaren’s progress and Norris’ growing confidence, fans can expect a thrilling title fight in 2025.
