Hyundai and Giorgetto Giugiaro are collaborating to rebuild the 1974 Pony Coupe concept

Hyundai and the Italian design studio GFG Style, particularly its father and son creators Giorgetto and Fabrizio Giugiaro, revealed plans to recreate one of the Korean marque’s most significant automobiles, the 1974 Pony Coupe Concept.

The design was created by Giorgetto Giugiaro for Hyundai and served as a forerunner to the Pony series of automobiles, which were marketed from 1975 to 1990. In case you didn’t know, Giugiaro took inspiration for his classic work on the DeLorean DMC 12 from the Pony Coupe Concept.

Hyundai and GFG Style are now going back to the drawing board in order to replicate that historic relationship. The redesigned concept automobile will be unveiled in the spring of 2023.

This isn’t the first time Hyundai has looked to the past for inspiration and influence for future designs. In 2019, Hyundai debuted the 45 Concept Car, which impacted the design of the Ioniq 5 production EV.

Hyundai will repair and modify a Pony into a one-of-a-kind EV concept in 2021. In 2022, the carmaker debuted another Pony-inspired concept, the N Vision 74 hydrogen-hybrid ‘rolling lab’ experimental vehicle.

We’ll have to wait and see what Giorgetto Giugiaro and GFG Style have in store for the impending renovation. According to SangYup Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Hyundai Motor’s Global Design Center, it will be reconstructed with the company’s design philosophy “Shaping the future with legacy” in mind.
