Google intends to develop an AI model that supports the top 1,000 languages

Google has a large language portfolio, but it does not want to stop there. The business unveiled its aspirations to construct an AI language model that covers the world’s 1000 most spoken languages during an AI keynote event in New York. According to the firm, over 7000 languages are spoken worldwide, but just a handful of them are represented online now.

Google’s 1,000 Languages Initiative is the company’s ambitious endeavour to develop an AI model that will support the world’s top 1,000 languages. The business has created a Universal Speech Model (USM) that has been trained in over 400 languages as part of this endeavour. Google claims to have collaborated with communities all across the globe to collect representative voice data.

Google CEO Sunder Pichai said during the event, which focused on reinventing how technology might impact people’s lives, that Google sees opportunities ahead and is “dedicated to making sure the technology is created in service of helping people, like any revolutionary technology.”

Because the project is big and involves participation from people all across the globe, it might take several years to finish. Google, on the other hand, is already working on the project and claims to see the “road clearly.”

The corporation also said that AI can be used to address climate change and health issues. It has improved its satellite photos in order to train AI algorithms to recognise and monitor wildfires in real-time. This wildfire surveillance system was recently implemented in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and is now being rolled out in portions of Australia.
