Gmail Introduces “Voice Compose” Feature for On-the-Go Email Drafting

Duet AI's "Help me write" Tool Gets a Voice Compose Expansion, Simplifying Email Composition

Gmail users can look forward to a potentially game-changing feature that will make composing emails on the go a breeze. The email service is reportedly working on a “voice compose” feature, enabling users to draft messages using their voice, with the assistance of AI to refine and finalize the content before sending.

This exciting addition could be an extension of the existing “Help me write” tool, which is part of Google’s Duet AI platform. Over recent months, Duet AI has become increasingly integrated into Google Workspace, making productivity and communication more efficient.

The discovery of this voice compose feature was made by the diligent team at 9to5Google, who explored the APK of the latest Gmail version to uncover upcoming enhancements.

Voice compose is poised to be an invaluable tool for users seeking to send quick messages or replies, particularly when they are on the move, such as during travel or on their way to meetings. Duet AI will play a pivotal role in transforming voice notes into polished and professional messages.

Furthermore, signs suggest that Duet AI’s “Help me write” capability may receive a minor redesign regarding how it is accessed. Previously, this tool was launched from an icon located at the bottom-right corner of the compose screen. However, it appears that this icon, now resembling a pen with a sparkle, has been relocated to a more prominent position at the top of the message window, alongside familiar buttons for attachments, sending, and an overflow menu. This adjustment aligns “Help me write” with Gmail’s standard layout.

If your email message is blank, tapping “Help me write” will provide a prompt or suggestion for your message. However, if you have already begun composing, it will display a “Refine my message” menu, offering options like “Formalize,” “Elaborate,” “Shorten,” and “Write a draft,” which returns to the initial prompt field.

The changes to “Help me write” have already been rolled out for Gmail on Android and iOS. As for the “voice compose” feature, its presence in the APK indicates that Google is actively working on it. However, it may still be some time before this innovative capability is officially released.

Back in June 2023, Google initially announced the introduction of its AI-powered “Help Me Write” tool for Gmail on Android and iOS. This tool can help users draft email replies by editing an existing email or generating an entire message based on a prompt, with the flexibility for users to make their edits or refinements to tone and length. It was initially available to enrolled Workspace testers on desktop before being expanded to mobile platforms.
