Data Compression

Meaning – The term data compression, refers to the reduction in the number of bits that are used to represent the data. This compression can either be lossy or lossless. In lossy compression, the bits that have been removed cannot be brought back, and as such, the compressed data is will remain as it is, with no stop to revert it to its original size and quality.

Lossless compression is one where the bits that were removed during the compression process, can be brought back, and the data cab be reverted back to its original size and quality.

the device that performs data compression is known as an encoder, while the device that reveres this compression, is known as a decoder.

Example of usage“As the raw file was too big to be uploaded onto the platform, the vlogger had to compress it to the desired size and then upload it for everyone to see.”
