Gangstar returns as a multiplayer open-world game, and MENA plays first

Twenty years after the first game hit phones, Gangstar is back — and it has traded its single-player roots for a multiplayer makeover. Level Infinite and Gameloft have opened pre-registration for Gangstar Mirage City, a free-to-play open-world action RPG due to launch on 20 August 2026, and the MENA region is getting early access ahead of most of the world.

That regional head start is the most interesting part of the announcement. A franchise that claims more than 340 million players is choosing the Middle East and North Africa as one of its first markets rather than an afterthought — a sign of how seriously the mobile gaming industry now takes the region. Arabic support ships at launch instead of arriving later as a patch, which is still far from a given for big global releases.

From solo crime spree to co-op heists

The reboot rebuilds Gangstar around playing with (and against) other people. The pitch: heists you run co-op with other players, PvP arenas, and an open world where four factions fight for control of the city. Territory progression is the hook meant to keep players logging in once the novelty fades. It launches on iOS and Android.

Crucially, Gameloft says no high-end device is required, so the audience is not limited to owners of flagship phones — an important detail in a region where mid-range Android handsets dominate. Anyone who pre-registers now earns regional rewards tied to an in-game event called the Global Vault Heist.

The skeptical read is familiar for any free-to-play open-world mobile title: the real test is monetization. Co-op heists and faction warfare sound fun, but whether Mirage City feels like a game or a storefront will come down to how aggressively the loot, timers and battle passes are tuned. The nostalgia of the Gangstar name will pull players in; the economy will decide whether they stay. Pre-registration is live now, with the launch set for 20 August.
