As rumors circulate about Lando Norris potentially moving to Red Bull Racing in the future, renowned motorsport figure Peter Windsor has cautioned the McLaren driver about the possibility of becoming Max Verstappen’s wingman if he makes the switch. Instead, Windsor has proposed a move to Alpine for Norris once his McLaren contract expires after the 2025 season.
While Norris still has two full seasons remaining on his current McLaren contract, the team’s lackluster performances have led to speculation about his future. Even Norris himself has expressed doubts about the team’s ability to turn their fortunes around, stating after the Spanish Grand Prix, where he dropped from third on the grid to 17th at the finish line due to a first-lap incident with Lewis Hamilton, that the expectation is almost not to finish in the points at the moment.
Given the circumstances, Windsor, a former Ferrari and Williams team manager, was recently asked for his opinion on Norris potentially moving from McLaren to Red Bull in the coming years. Windsor advised Norris to carefully consider his options, highlighting the likelihood of assuming a supporting role to Verstappen if he joins Red Bull.
Windsor stated, “Lando’s doing such a great job at McLaren, and he may want to move to a ‘mega car,’ as he calls it. But if he went to Red Bull, he would most likely become Max Verstappen’s wingman.”
To avoid such a scenario, Windsor proposed a switch to Alpine, formerly known as Renault, once Norris’s contract with McLaren concludes in 2025. Windsor believes that Alpine could offer Norris a more favorable environment, potentially allowing him to take on a leading role within the team.
