Snap goes all-in on the Esports World Cup with its biggest AR activation yet

Snap is making its biggest play yet for gaming’s marquee event. The company and the Esports Foundation on Thursday unveiled Snap’s largest-ever activation around the Esports World Cup (EWC), stacking augmented reality, camera tech and creator content on top of the tournament as it lands in Paris — the first time the event has been staged outside Riyadh — running July 6 through August 23.

The centerpiece is Snap’s CamKit technology, which the company has wired directly into the video boards inside the arenas. That lets fans in the stands trigger Snapchat Lenses during live matches, including a custom EWC Lens built exclusively for the event. Away from the venue, Snapchatters get a dedicated Esports World Cup AR experience, venue guides layered onto the Snap Map, and interactive “AR Mirror” activations designed to be filmed and shared.

The logic is straightforward. Esports audiences skew young, mobile and camera-native — exactly the crowd Snap needs to keep engaged. The company is also leaning on its creator roster, teaming with EWC to pull in some of the biggest names for daily content, match reactions and behind-the-scenes coverage across the seven-week run.

Gaming is one of the most active and engaged communities on Snapchat, particularly in Saudi Arabia where millions of Snapchatters engage with gaming content every month.

A tournament worth showing up for

The scale helps explain the investment. EWC 2026 brings together more than 2,000 players from around the world across 25 tournaments, competing for a record-breaking $75 million prize pool. Over seven weeks, it has become one of the largest celebrations of gaming on the planet — and its first international edition in Paris gives Snap a far bigger stage than Riyadh alone.

Whether AR Lenses and Map pins translate into the kind of sticky, monetizable engagement Snap needs is another question. Activations like these are easy to announce and hard to measure, and Snap has spent years trying to convince investors that its camera bets — from Lenses to its Specs smart glasses effort — add up to a durable business. But meeting a huge, hard-to-reach audience where it already is beats trying to chase it down later.

For now, Snap gets to plant its flag at gaming’s biggest live event just as it goes global — with a captive Gen Z crowd already pointing their phones at the action.
