rabbit has introduced rabbitOS 2, a significant update for its Rabbit R1 handheld AI device. The R1, which originally launched at $199, gained attention for its voice-interaction capabilities but faced criticism for lacking functionality beyond what conventional smartphones could offer. This latest update addresses those concerns by introducing a more feature-rich and user-friendly operating system.
rabbitOS 2 brings a colorful, card-based interface that organizes core system features into individual cards. Users can navigate functions by swiping through these cards or utilizing the device’s scroll wheel, making access to features more intuitive. The update also expands multimodal functionality, allowing users to interact with R1 not just through voice, but also by incorporating text and images into queries.
A major innovation in rabbitOS 2 is the introduction of “creations,” powered by agentic AI. This new development enables users to create software tools, games, and experiences directly on the device through real-time, natural language conversations, a process rabbit calls “vibe coding.” Users do not need technical skills to build these creations, and can either design their own or select from a library of user-generated experiences that can be freely installed on the R1.
According to founder and CEO Jesse Lyu, the software redesign was motivated by user feedback and a desire to bridge the gap between user expectations and the capabilities of the original R1 software. The update has transformed the device by adding greater control, more interactive functionalities, and ongoing software improvements—over 30 updates have been delivered in the past 16 months.
rabbitOS 2 will be delivered to current R1 owners with no hardware changes required. In addition, rabbit is offering free global shipping for all new R1 orders placed on its website until the end of September.
