Windows 11 users report SATA SSD bug: Microsoft investigating

Microsoft has acknowledged the persistence of an unusual bug affecting SATA hard drives in Windows 11, which has also plagued previous versions of the operating system, including Windows 10, Windows 8.1, and Windows 7.

According to a report by Neowin, Microsoft has provided information on this issue in a support document, alerting users about the glitch and offering guidance on how to address it.

The bug causes internal SATA drives, encompassing both traditional hard drives and solid-state drives (SSDs) connected via a SATA interface, to be erroneously identified as removable media in the Windows taskbar. This misidentification occurs despite the fact that the drives are firmly installed and meant to function as permanent storage components.

Microsoft clarifies the technicality behind the bug, stating, “Whether or not a device is considered removable is determined by your system’s BIOS and how it marks the various SATA ports on the motherboard.”

The company further explains that the default inbox driver used by Windows inspects the SATA ports and categorizes devices connected to ports marked as “external” as removable. This behavior is not exhibited by all storage drivers, and it has the potential to lead to data corruption or loss.

To address the issue, Microsoft advises users to consult the motherboard manufacturer or system builder for an appropriate BIOS update that correctly identifies the SATA ports and prevents the misclassification of internal drives as removable media.

While encountering bugs in operating systems is not uncommon, the recurrence of this particular issue across multiple versions of Windows raises concerns about its long-term impact on users. Microsoft’s acknowledgment and provision of guidance demonstrate the company’s commitment to addressing the bug and helping users navigate through potential data integrity risks.

As Windows 11 continues to evolve, users can expect further updates and refinements to address such issues. It is essential for individuals to stay vigilant, keep their systems up to date, and promptly implement necessary fixes to ensure the stability and reliability of their storage devices.
