In a move that’s sure to please many of its users, WhatsApp has introduced a new feature that allows messages to be saved in a disappearing message thread. Called “Keep in Chat,” the option lets users long-press on a message to ensure it remains in the thread even after the timer runs out. However, the sender of the message will be notified and given the option to veto the decision to keep the message in the chat.
With a bookmark icon next to saved messages, users can easily access their preserved messages in the “Kept Messages” folder, organized by chat. Although this feature may seem to contradict the purpose of disappearing messages, WhatsApp has suggested in a blog post that it may be useful for times when messages contain important information, such as voice notes or addresses.
Notably, Keep in Chat puts control in the hands of the message sender, who can decide whether to preserve the message or let it vanish as intended. This ensures that privacy concerns are addressed, even with saved messages.
Although the feature is still rolling out gradually, it’s expected to be available to all users within a few weeks. With this update, WhatsApp is giving its users greater control over their conversations and ensuring that important messages aren’t lost to the ether.
