Volkswagen has set the stage for pre-sales of the revamped 2024 ID.4 and ID.5 electric crossovers in Europe, offering a glimpse of the future with prices starting at 40,335 euros ($42,810) in Germany for the entry-level Pure trim.
The foremost updates encompass a cutting-edge generation of infotainment systems and software, a much-anticipated enhancement that ID vehicle owners have been eagerly awaiting. Additionally, a new electric motor on the rear axle and the introduction of more potent GTX dual-motor models signify Volkswagen’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of electric mobility.
The spotlight is on the latest infotainment and software, with Volkswagen heralding the arrival of a swifter and feature-rich software generation. This not only improves speed but also enhances the system’s overall functionality, making it more user-friendly. Both the ID.4 and ID.5 models receive a revamped standard infotainment system, now boasting a generously sized 12.9-inch diagonal screen.
Volkswagen has taken a significant step with a completely reimagined menu structure for the infotainment system. Furthermore, the standard Digital Cockpit and optional augmented reality head-up display have undergone improvements, enriching the in-cabin experience.
As seen in the updated ID.3, the touch sliders for air conditioning and volume control now feature illumination, adding a touch of sophistication. In addition, the 2024 ID.4 and ID.5 sport a new multifunction steering wheel with revised operational logic. One notable shift in the interior layout is the relocation of the driving mode selector from the Digital Cockpit housing to the steering column switch, mirroring the setup found in the ID.7 sedan. This adjustment was made to create space for the larger infotainment display.
Volkswagen is also introducing an enhanced voice assistant named IDA. This updated assistant offers more precise responses to natural voice commands and provides new features, including cloud-based weather information, live scores for sporting events, and stock market prices.
It’s worth noting that all these advancements will also be making their way to the 2024 Volkswagen ID.4, set to hit the U.S. market early next year.
In the powertrain department, the rear-wheel-drive ID.4 Pro and ID.5 Pro models equipped with the 77-kilowatt-hour battery pack are equipped with a new electric motor on the rear axle. This motor, first seen on the ID.7 sedan, delivers an impressive 282 horsepower (210 kilowatts) and 402 pound-feet (545 Newton-meters) of torque. These figures represent substantial boosts of 81 hp and 173 lb-ft in comparison to the previous setup.
The new rear electric motor is also integrated into the all-wheel-drive ID.4 Pro 4Motion, creating a system power output of 282 hp, a significant increase of 21 hp.
In addition, the range-topping ID.4 GTX and ID.5 GTX, both featuring all-wheel drive, receive a power bump of 40 horsepower, resulting in a total output of 335 hp (250 kW). This improvement catapults the 0-62 mph sprint time to 5.4 seconds, while the top speed remains limited to 112 mph.
For models equipped with the 77-kWh battery pack, the ID.4 and ID.5 now offer an extended WLTP range, reaching up to 342 miles (550 kilometers) for the ID.4 Pro RWD, an increase of 10 miles, and up to 345 miles (556 km) for the ID.5 Pro RWD, adding 7 miles to the previous range.
Charging capabilities have also received a boost, with the ID.4 and ID.5 RWD models now capable of charging at up to 135 kW, while the AWD variants can now charge at a faster rate of up to 175 kW. With maximum charging capacity, ID.4 and ID.5 AWD models can gain an impressive 110 miles of range in approximately 10 minutes of DC fast charging. Additionally, the base VW ID.4 Pure with a 52-kWh battery now charges at up to 115 kW, an improvement over the previous 110 kW.
A noteworthy addition is the implementation of new charging and thermal management that ensures the battery is pre-conditioned while driving to the next DC fast charging station.
In the United States, the 2024 VW ID.4 will receive the new rear motor and the more potent dual-motor powertrain, although it will not carry the GTX badge, instead being branded as the ID.4 AWD Pro.
Volkswagen’s commitment to enhancing the ID.4 and ID.5 models reflects the brand’s dedication to advancing electric mobility, promising a more electrifying and feature-rich driving experience for customers in Europe and the United States.
