TikTok has announced the launch of a standalone gaming channel on its platform, following in the footsteps of streaming behemoth Netflix, which launched mobile games last year. The video gaming industry is one of the most lucrative in the entertainment industry, and TikTok is entering an interesting period as rivals Snapchat and Facebook both wind down their gaming platforms.

Users will be able to access games through a button on the site. According to four people familiar with the plans, it would include a slew of mobile games where adverts may be distributed, and consumers can pay for extra material. TikTok’s parent firm, ByteDance, has previously produced its own games and is now aiming to introduce them to a new channel and audience.

Over the last year, the sector in China has been scrutinized by state officials, resulting in significant delays in game licenses. Meanwhile, the amount of time youngsters are permitted to spend playing video games has been limited in the country.

Assaf Sagy, a former McKinsey management and Intel system architect, was recruited as TikTok’s president of the global gaming business last month.

“TikTok and gaming were built for one other,” Sagy said last week in a LinkedIn post announcing his new position.

“TikTok has far shown its value in helping consumers discover what’s fun, valuable, and popular. I look forward to working closely with all gaming companies globally to help make TikTok a central foundation in your marketing strategies.”

The new gaming channel may be unveiled next month during the “TikTok Made Me Play It” event on November 2nd, which the company has dubbed its “first gaming event.”

According to two individuals familiar with TikTok’s plans, the company is attempting to replicate Netflix, which produced mobile games based on its hits such as Stranger Things last year.
