Looks like the developers of the TimeSplitters game, the Embracer Group is undergoing a bit of a restructuring drive, as well as a cost cutting drive at the moment, which can only mean one thing – The much awaited TimeSplitters remake may not be happening for a while.
In the last three months, the Embracer Group has reduced their workforce by around 900 people, but they didn’t stop there. They went ahead and laid off 50 workers from FishLabs as well. Coming to the Free Radical Group, the developer group responsible for the TimeSplitters remake, it looks like the entire group may be in trouble as the Embracer group has hinted that they may be shutting the whole group as early as December 11th.
“As we move through the consultation process and face the potential closure of Free Radical Design on 11 December 2023, I want to express my gratitude for your commitment and the remarkable work you’ve done and still keep doing,” Wingefors said. “This is a challenging time for all of us but especially for you, and our focus is to support you as much as we can during this transition.”
Now, one thing to note is that the group is based in Nottingham, UK, and according to UK Law, The Embracer Group has to give 30 days notice to the Free Radical Design team before they can end their operations, something that they don’t seem to have done.
Free Radical developed the first TimeSplitters game, which saw a level of success, but unfortunately, the group went bankrupt in 2008, but the founders of the group revived the study under Plaion division Deep Silver, and announced the revival of the TimeSplitters project. It remains to be seen what will happen to the IP should the Free Radical Design team face the sack.
