Surfshark, a popular VPN provider, has introduced a new feature called “Alternative ID” to protect users from identity theft attacks online. This feature allows users to create an online persona with a new name and email address, which can be used to access content on websites that require personal information without revealing their real identity.
By using Alternative ID, users can eliminate spam and protect themselves from data breaches and cyberattacks. The alternative email account created forwards emails to the user’s real email address, acting as a buffer for anonymous communication. If the user no longer wants to receive emails, they can simply close or modify their alternative email address.
According to Sarunas Sereika, product manager at Surfshark, many websites ask for personal information like name, address, and email, and data breaches and data brokers are becoming more prevalent. Alternative ID helps users minimize their online footprint and enhance privacy while still being able to sign up on websites or subscribe to newsletters without concerns about privacy and security.
While other companies offer similar services, Surfshark believes its solution is different due to its dedication to credibility, transparent privacy policies, and providing a safe and reliable experience for users. Alternative ID is currently in beta for existing Surfshark users and will be fully released with additional features in the future.
