Mercedes-electric Benz’s G-Wagen will be available in mid-2024, according to the company’s chairman

According to reports, Mercedes-electric Benz’s G-Wagen will be available in mid-2024, according to company chairman Ola Källenius at a roundtable with media this week.

Källenius also said that he drove a prototype version of the electric SUV at the company’s testing site in Graz, Austria, and was persuaded that electric vehicles are the future of off-road adventure.

Mercedes did not announce any production plans when it originally revealed a concept version of the electrified SUV in September 2021. In fact, Källenius said in 2019 that he was unsure if the G-Wagen had a future at all. It seems that an electric version of the boxy off-roader is on the way.

Despite this, we’re still in the early stages, and information is scarce. Mercedes has not provided any range, battery capacity, or power output estimations. The concept version, however, has an all-wheel drive, and it stands to reason that the final version would as well.

The electric G-Wagen concept we saw in 2021, like most concepts, was more of a design exercise than a show vehicle. It was a first effort at how Mercedes-Benz may adopt the next generation of the G-Class, which was initially exhibited at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, and something to ogle until a production version arrives.

When the production EQG comes in mid-2024, it will join a growing range of electric vehicles capable of traversing tough terrain, including the GMC Hummer EV truck and SUV, Rivian R1T and R1S, Chevy Silverado EV, and Ford F-150 Lightning.

The G-Wagen has always been as much about prestige as it is about going off-road, so anticipate the production EQG to be equipped with all of the same goodies that Mercedes-Benz has been rolling out in its newest, most costly cars, such as the EQS sedan.

If Mercedes-Benz can deliver the EQG with the same range and performance as its EQS and EQE sedans on the company’s new electric vehicle platform, the electric G-Wagen may be something to see.

Mercedes-Benz plans to become all-electric by 2030, investing €40 billion ($47 billion) in the endeavor.
