In a rather understated fashion, Huawei has released its Mate 60 and Mate 60 Pro smartphones in China, marking its second flagship series for the year. Despite the lack of fanfare, these devices come equipped with impressive hardware, signaling a significant development for the company.
The Huawei Mate 60 Pro, running on the company’s HarmonyOS, boasts a 6.82-inch 2720 x 1260 LTPO OLED display with a silky-smooth 120Hz refresh rate. The display offers a nearly bezel-less experience, interrupted only by a subtle hole-punch design for selfies and facial recognition.
Huawei’s camera prowess shines through with a robust triple-lens rear camera setup comprising a 50MP primary camera, a 12MP ultra-wide camera, and a 48MP telephoto camera. A substantial 5,000 mAh battery powers this flagship device, featuring an impressive 88W fast-charging capability.
The Mate 60, while sharing most features with the Mate 60 Pro, makes some compromises. It retains the fast charging and LTPO display but does away with the triple-hole punch for facial recognition. The battery is slightly smaller at 4,750 mAh, and the charging speed is reduced to 66W.
One noteworthy development is the addition of 5G support, a significant milestone for Huawei given the trade restrictions imposed on the company during the Trump administration. In the past, Huawei struggled to obtain 5G chips due to these restrictions, resulting in its flagship devices being limited to 4G connectivity.
However, it’s worth noting that despite this milestone, Huawei still faces challenges in gaining a foothold in international markets. The absence of Google Play services remains a major hurdle for many users, limiting the appeal of its devices.
While Huawei’s future remains uncertain in global markets, the introduction of 5G support in the Mate 60 series signals the company’s determination to remain competitive and adapt to changing circumstances.
The low-key launch of the Mate 60 and Mate 60 Pro may have caught some off guard, but it is clear that Huawei is forging ahead with innovation, even in the face of adversity.
