Google’s Gemini AI Slides Into Messages, But Your Mileage May Vary

Google’s AI chatbot Gemini is expanding its reach, now sliding into Google Messages for Android users. The rollout, which kicked off after June 18, brings AI-powered assistance to your texts – but how you access it might depend on your specific Android flavor.

According to reports, Gemini in Messages will offer to draft replies, engage in playful banter, and even help plan events. Some users will find the AI tucked away in the New Chat menu, while others might spot a shiny new floating action button (FAB) sporting the Gemini logo.

The FAB implementation, as noted by Android Police, offers a more streamlined experience. It hovers above the New Chat button, reducing the taps needed to summon your AI assistant. As an added visual flourish, the compose button shrinks as you scroll when the FAB is present.

Before you dive in, Google presents a terms and conditions page outlining Gemini’s limitations. Conversations aren’t encrypted, so exercise caution with sensitive info. The AI won’t have access to your private chats or pinpoint location, but it might have a general idea based on your IP or home address.

To use Gemini in Messages, your Android device needs to meet specific criteria. You’ll need at least 6GB of RAM, RCS chats enabled, and your language set to English or Canadian French. Google’s help page offers more details on requirements, as well as instructions for managing your AI conversations.

The Gemini-Messages integration is expected to roll out widely in the coming weeks. Whether you get the menu option or the fancy FAB, Google’s AI is ready to spice up your text convos – just remember to keep those terms and conditions in mind.
