Google is currently testing a feature that could allow Gmail users to modify their primary email addresses. Evidence of this development was found within the code of the Gmail for Android application version 2024.11.24.698310208. Historically, Google has not permitted users to change the @gmail.com address associated with an existing account, forcing those who want a new handle to create an entirely new account and manually transfer data.
The discovered code references a “Change primary email” option within the Google Account settings. This tool appears to allow a user to select a new email handle while maintaining their existing emails, Drive files, YouTube subscriptions, and Play Store purchases. Currently, if a user creates a new Gmail account, they lose access to their history and purchases unless they utilize complex migration tools or maintain two separate logins.
While the feature is not yet live for the general public, the strings of code suggest that Google is addressing a common request from long-term users. Many individuals who created accounts during the service’s early years frequently seek to change addresses that no longer reflect their professional or personal identities. This update would align Gmail with other major providers like Outlook and Yahoo, which already offer varying degrees of flexibility for changing primary aliases.
There are technical constraints indicated in the early findings. Users may be limited in how frequently they can change their primary address to prevent abuse and security risks. Additionally, it remains unclear if the old email address will automatically forward messages to the new one or if it will be immediately released back into the pool of available usernames for other people to claim. Google has not officially confirmed the release date or the specific requirements for using this tool.
The implementation of this feature would simplify the process for users undergoing name changes or those seeking to improve their digital privacy by moving away from old, leaked handles. By decoupling the primary email address from the underlying Google Account ID, the company would remove one of the last major barriers to account customization.
Google typically announces major workspace and account updates during its annual developer conferences or through official blog posts. While no official price is associated with Gmail, this feature is expected to be available for both free personal accounts and Google One subscribers. The rollout is projected to begin as a beta test in the first half of 2026, following the finalization of the Android 16 software cycle.
