George R.R. Martin keeps away from Elden Rings to finish the Winds of Winter Novel

In an interview, George R.R. confessed that he hasn’t played Elden Ring in order to complete his other projects. The acclaimed author of A Song of Ice and Fire just published The Rise of the Dragon: An Illustrated History of the Targaryen Dynasty, a graphic book based on Fire and Blood.

A substantial chunk of Elden Ring’s backstory was written by developer FromSoftware in collaboration with Martin. In a recent interview with Stephen Colbert on The Late Show, he said that he covered events that occurred 5,000 years before the game’s current timeframe. With this information, fans have already picked out features in the game, such as character names beginning with G, R, or M, that were reportedly designed to pay respect to the creator. Martin has repeatedly disputed these allegations on his blog.

Having said that, Martin stated that he hasn’t played Elden Ring since it was released earlier this year. Speaking to Colbert, he expressed concern that he might get so engrossed in it that he would be unable to complete The Winds of Winter, the sixth volume in the Song of Ice and Fire trilogy. He was also mindful of admirers who had been waiting for years and told them that the book was almost finished. Martin used to be a big fan of games like Railroad Tycoon, Master of Orion, and Homeworld. He recalled spending hours, weeks, and months playing them.

Martin also appreciated the effort that has gone into games such as Elden Ring. He discovered that video games take as long, if not longer, to create as feature films. He then praised Elden Ring, calling it the most beautiful game he’d ever seen because of the amount of detail and world building that went into it.

Elden Ring gamers may surely identify to Martin’s worries, particularly given the number of difficult boss bouts in the game. Some have even gone so far as to repeat it numerous times in order to try out different builds and complete various Elden Ring challenge runs with restricted resources. The game itself is a commitment.

Martin might start playing Elden Ring after completing The Winds of Winter, which has 60 hours of playtime. However, this would imply that the next Song of Ice and Fire novel might take a long time to complete. Nonetheless, it only goes to show that even renowned writers like him can get as engaged in gaming as the rest of us.

Elden Ring is currently available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
