Kojima Productions has officially announced its next animated project, Death Stranding: Mosquito (I know, it sounds weird, but bear with me here). This new anime feature, unveiled with a teaser trailer at the Beyond the Strand event, introduces a mysterious protagonist nicknamed Mosquito, known for a strange mask that allows them to “suck something” from their enemies, though the nature and purpose of this power hasn’t fully been revealed yet. The Mosquito character and story bring a new angle to the post-apocalyptic world of Death Stranding, but details on how their abilities impact the plot are still under wraps.
Along with this anime, Kojima Productions is working on a live-action Death Stranding film in partnership with A24. Both adaptations are set to tell brand new stories within the familiar Death Stranding universe, not simply repeating the games’ plots.
The very quirkily named Death Stranding: Mosquito is produced in fact, by Hideo Kojima and directed by Hiroshi Miyamoto, who has credits on titles like Pretty Cure Dream Stars! The screenplay is handled by Aaron Guzikowski, known for the TV series Raised by Wolves and the film Prisoners. Animation is in the hands of ABC Animation Studio, with background visuals from Studio Easter, famous for their work on Dandadan.
No release date or window has been announced yet. Fans are already speculating about Mosquito’s mysterious powers, especially after seeing a teaser segment where Mosquito battles a porter. Expect more updates as Kojima Productions continues developing the anime and expands its footprint beyond games.
