Dead by Daylight Update Brings Two Beneficial Matchmaking Changes

The matchmaking system in Dead by Daylight is being updated once more, with developer Behaviour Interactive focusing on two more specific areas: team-based ratings that evaluate players based on their team’s performance and considerations for players who haven’t played in a while and are trying to get back into the game. Behaviour said that the proposed enhancements for these two areas would be implemented in the 6.4.0 version, with some examples supplied this week to show how the changes will operate.

Behaviour highlighted Survivors’ complaints with pursuing team-focused goals like rescuing a teammate only to be killed themselves, which would be classified as a defeat by the game for the team-based aspect of the matchmaking update. To address this, Behaviour said that when the update is released, “ratings will be based both on individual and team performance.” This implies that for every teammate who escapes, Survivors get more ratings if they too escape and lose less if they perish. Players receive less rating by fleeing and lose more rating if they die for each teammate that dies. Essentially, this adjustment creates an incentive for cooperative play rather than each player fending for himself.

“For example, if you die but every other Survivor escapes, your rating will hardly drop at all. In other words, keep your team alive for the best results! With this change, we aim to put a bit more emphasis on team play without removing the lone wolf playstyle,” Behaviour said.

Part 2 of the adjustments is a little simpler to grasp. According to Behaviour, the matching algorithm has “a confidence level,” and if you haven’t played in a while, the game will be easier on you than if you’ve been playing regularly.

“Simply put, after long break, the matchmaking system will lower this confidence level until you’ve played a certain number of matches. This way if you’re feeling rusty, your rating will drop much quicker than before, letting you face easier opponents much sooner. Meanwhile if you play as well as when you left- say if for example you’ve been playing similar games while you were away- you’ll stay more or less around the same place.”

Matchmaking adjustments are regular in Dead by Daylight, thus these modifications will most likely be iterated on further in the future, but these two improvements will be included in the 6.4.0 release.
