CD Projekt Red Unveils Early Development of ‘Orion,’ Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel

Sequel in Conceptual Design Phase, Led by Veteran Team from Cyberpunk 2077 and Phantom Liberty

CD Projekt Red has officially confirmed the development of the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, tentatively titled “Orion.” During CD Projekt Red’s Investor Day presentation held on October 5, Chief Creative Officer Adam Badowski provided an update on the much-anticipated sequel, revealing that it is currently in its early conceptual design stages (as reported by VGC).

Badowski explained, “This project is on a conceptual design level right now, and it’s going to be designed by a team of veterans who were responsible for fine-tuning Cyberpunk 2077 and designing Phantom Liberty.”

The development team for ‘Orion’ will operate out of North American locations, specifically Vancouver and Boston, with the team leadership already established there. In late 2024, they plan to expand their workforce to teams comprising several dozen people. The target is for half of the developers to work out of the northern U.S., and the other half to work out of Poland.

Given that ‘Orion’ is still in the conceptual design phase, it’s unlikely that major updates on its development will be available anytime soon. While fans eagerly await more content in the Cyberpunk universe, it’s worth noting that the first game took approximately nine years to develop. However, with the experience gained from Cyberpunk 2077, it’s hopeful that the sequel’s development timeline will be more streamlined.

In the same presentation, CD Projekt Red shared significant milestones. Cyberpunk 2077 has achieved sales of 25 million copies since its launch in 2020, while Phantom Liberty reached three million sales within its first week. CEO Adam Kici?ski highlighted that the sci-fi RPG is outselling its predecessor, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, in terms of the speed at which it’s reaching sales milestones. He noted, “The phenomenal Witcher 3 achieved a similar level in 4.5 years, and here [in Cyberpunk’s case], a little bit over two years [since its release]. We are selling far faster than we were selling The Witcher game.” This success highlights the enduring popularity of the Cyberpunk franchise.
