Baldur’s Gate 3 Pays Tribute to Final Fantasy with References to Emotional Scenes

Baldur’s Gate 3 has included a subtle reference to Final Fantasy 14, specifically a nod to one of the MMO’s most heart-wrenching scenes from its first expansion, Heavensward.

In Baldur’s Gate 3, there’s a hidden side mission titled “A Smile Better Suits…”, which mirrors a quote from Haurchefant Greystone, a beloved character from Final Fantasy 14. In the original scene from the MMO, Haurchefant sacrifices himself to save the Warrior of Light and utters his last words: “Oh, do not look at me so. A smile better suits a hero…”

The reference can be found in Baldur’s Gate 3 as part of the buffs available to characters with the Folk Hero background. Characters in the game can gain re-rolls on skill checks by acting in ways that honor their backstory.

Baldur’s Gate 3, developed by Larian Studios, is known for its immersive storytelling and captivating character drama, much like Final Fantasy 14’s emotionally resonant main storyline. Both CRPGs (Computer Role-Playing Games) and JRPGs (Japanese Role-Playing Games) share an interest in evoking strong emotions in players, and this reference is a testament to the connection between fans of both genres.
