Atari is making a bid for the return of classic games from the 1980s and 1990s with its acquisition of more than 100 PC and console titles. These games come from publishers such as Accolade, Micropose, and Infogrames, and include some Atari IPs. Some of the newly acquired titles include Bubsy, Hardball, and the Demolition Racer series. The acquisition also brings Accolade’s trademark to Atari’s vault.
Atari CEO Wade Rosen said that many of these titles were part of Atari’s history, and fans can expect to see the games re-released in both physical and digital formats. According to Rosen, some of these games will be ported to modern consoles. This move is part of Atari’s ongoing plan to reinvigorate the company, which includes a multi-year effort to transform its brand and focus on investing in IPs that have proven to be popular. Reports indicate that Atari is developing reimagined versions of classic games, such as Asteroids and Missile Command.
Last month, Atari acquired Nightdive Studios and the IPs of 12 Stern Electronics Arcade Classics, including Berzerk and Frenzy. Atari plans to release both new adaptations of past storylines and rereleases of existing games on modern consoles. Nightdive Studios specializes in remastering retro games for modern systems, making it the perfect acquisition for Atari’s plan. With these acquisitions and developments, Atari aims to solidify its place in the gaming industry while also providing gamers with classic gaming experiences with modern technology.
