Apple is expected to refresh its non-Pro AirPods lineup as soon as next month, potentially replacing the current second-generation entry-level AirPods. According to a report from Bloomberg, the fourth-generation AirPods will be available in two versions: a budget-friendly model with basic features and a higher-end version equipped with active noise cancellation, which may replace the third-generation model.
Design tweaks are anticipated to differentiate the two models further. Currently, the basic AirPods 2 are priced at $129, although they often go on sale. The AirPods 3, which have a similar appearance to the noise-cancelling AirPods Pro, retail for $179.
A significant reason for this lineup update appears to be the transition to USB-C charging cases across all AirPods models, phasing out the Lightning connector. The mid-tier AirPods 4 are also expected to feature wireless charging.
In addition to hardware updates, Apple is reportedly working on new firmware for the AirPods Pro, which will include head gesture controls and improved noise isolation. These features may also be incorporated into the mid-tier version of the new fourth-gen AirPods.
Both new AirPod models are likely to support Spatial Audio, and the higher-end version may offer Apple Watch charging using the case’s built-in battery, similar to the current AirPods 3. The AirPods 2 will be discontinued, though the AirPods 3 might remain available at a lower price.
This update aligns with earlier rumors about the AirPods lineup refresh. While it’s uncertain whether a third-generation AirPods Pro will be announced, Apple has promised enhanced voice isolation in a future firmware update.
The new AirPods models are expected to be unveiled at an event next month, alongside new iPhone, iPad, and Mac models.
