Tom Coronel, the Dutch racing driver, has spoken out about the potential of Alex Albon, suggesting that he has the ability to become a Formula 1 World Champion with the right car under him.
Albon made his return to Formula 1 in 2022 with Williams, after a year spent as Red Bull’s reserve driver. Prior to that, he had spent a difficult year-and-a-half as teammate to Red Bull’s star driver, Max Verstappen. However, Coronel believes that Albon has regained his confidence and could be in line for great things.
Verstappen has become a two-time World Champion, and is on course for his third title in 2023. Coronel thinks that Albon could follow in his footsteps, as long as he has a good car.
“I would like to see Alex Albon in a real car,” Coronel said on the RacingNews365.com Formula 1 podcast. “Red Bull, that was too early. Experience also gives something.”
Coronel drew comparisons between Albon’s potential achievement and what Nico Rosberg accomplished in 2016. Rosberg was able to triumph over his teammate, Lewis Hamilton, in their final season together in Mercedes colors, becoming champion before retiring from Formula 1.
“If you have the better car and a bit of luck, Nico Rosberg also became champion,” Coronel added.
