A recently unearthed internal email thread has shed light on a clandestine meeting between Activision and Nintendo in December 2022, where they delved into the details of Nintendo’s upcoming console, internally referred to as the “NG Switch.”
According to a report by The Verge, these confidential emails exchanged between Activision CEO Bobby Kotick and other high-ranking Activision executives, including Armin Zerza, the chief financial officer of Activision Blizzard, and Chris Schnakenberg, the senior vice president of global platform strategy and partner relations at Activision Blizzard, have surfaced as part of the FTC v. Microsoft case.
While much of the correspondence remains concealed, one section of the email chain is visible, stating, “Considering the similarity in performance to eighth-generation platforms and our prior successful ventures on PS4 and Xbox One, it’s reasonable to assume we could create compelling content for the NG Switch as well. Securing early access to development hardware prototypes would be invaluable to substantiate this.”
Earlier this month, reports emerged that behind-the-scenes tech demonstrations for the rumored Nintendo Switch 2 took place during Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, in August. Among these demos was said to be an enhanced version of the beloved game “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,” optimized to leverage the specifications of the Switch 2. While insiders confirmed these reports, Nintendo has remained silent on any official announcements regarding their next console.
In a parallel development, additional documents unveiled through the FTC v. Microsoft case hint at an impending refresh of the Xbox Series X console. This refresh is expected to eliminate the base console’s disc drive in favor of a capacious 2TB internal storage option, alongside various other enhancements. The evolving landscape of gaming consoles continues to intrigue enthusiasts and industry observers alike.
