Activision Squares Up for Cross-Gen Battle with Black Ops 6

The next major release in Activision’s blockbuster Call of Duty franchise appears headed for a cross-generational launch, if newly leaked files are to be believed. Data miners have uncovered what look like product details for the still unannounced Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, suggesting the military shooter will deploy on both current and last-gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles.

According to files surfaced after the recent Season 4 update for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Black Ops 6 will be available in standard and deluxe “Vault” editions across PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PS4 and Xbox One platforms. A “cross-gen bundle” points to versions tailored for both the latest and previous console generations.

While edition specifics remain unclear, past Call of Duty premium versions have typically included cosmetic items, seasonal battle pass content and other digital bonuses at a premium price point over the base game. The leaked images also hint at a Fallout-themed cosmetics pack coming to Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone during Season 4.

If substantiated, a cross-gen Black Ops 6 could allow Activision to double-dip on the lucrative annual Call of Duty launch across a wider installed base as the latest round of Xbox and PlayStation consoles continue their gradual rollout alongside the aging but still widely-owned previous generation hardware.

With Microsoft already confirming the latest Black Ops for its Xbox Game Pass subscription service day one, all eyes are on Activision for official details as the projected Fall 2024 release window looms. The publisher’s bet on straddling console generations could pay off in maximizing Black Ops 6’s sales potential right out of the trench.
