Dubai Opera is betting on a rare collision of worlds this month: Bolshoi-level ballet, a contemporary double bill, and a costume lineup designed by CHANEL. On May 17, the venue will host MODANSE, a one-night performance headlined by internationally acclaimed ballerina Svetlana Zakharova, presented by M Premiere and produced by MuzArts.
The show pairs two one-act works that lean into contrast. It opens with Come Un Respiro (Like a Breath) (45 minutes), choreographed by Mauro Bigonzetti to music by George Frideric Handel, before shifting gears after an interval into Gabrielle Chanel (60 minutes), a ballet that interprets the life and legacy of the designer behind the CHANEL fashion house.
On paper, that second act is the hook. Gabrielle Chanel is choreographed by Yury Possokhov with music by Ilya Demutsky, and is written and directed by Alexei Frandetti. The production’s visual signature is just as prominent: under the artistic direction of Virginie Viard, CHANEL’s Fashion Studio created more than 85 bespoke costumes for the performance, translating the brand’s codes into stage movement.
For tech and consumer-culture watchers, the interesting bit is less “fashion meets dance” as a tagline and more what it says about live entertainment in 2026. Big venues are increasingly competing with at-home streaming and short-form content by turning performances into events—the kind with a built-in visual language designed to travel well on social feeds. When a global luxury brand’s studio is effectively part of the production team, you’re not just selling tickets, you’re selling a shareable moment.
MODANSE also arrives with serious pedigree. Created by MuzArts specifically for Zakharova, the program premiered at the Bolshoi Theatre in June 2019. And Zakharova herself frames the Chanel role as an exercise in transformation—researching biographical material and building a character that can be expressed through movement rather than dialogue.
